Review of Brick (2006) by Arnie B — 28 Dec 2012
If there's one thing that can be said about Brick it's that it is original. Not the story so much, which is a reasonably straight forward whodunit, but stylistically. The script is very odd, old fashioned and highly stylized, and not easy.
The actors, however, handle it extremely well, making some of the most unnatural lines just role off the tongue. In lesser hands the combination of arcane dialogue with the modern day sets and costumes design would result in an epic mess, but somehow Rian Johnson makes it all fit together.
The direction is unusual, with bizarre and extreme angles and some strange framing, but combined with the fast paced gumshoe dialogue somehow works. Brick is a fascinating film, never losing interest for a second.
Johnson is shaping up to be one to watch.
