Review of Breaking the Waves (2014) by Arin D — 16 Feb 2008
If only Dogme had remained like this. Despites its 158 minute length, the movie maintains a dramatic energy, sustained by Emily Watson's peerless acting.. Each 'chapter' is introduced with a song and an impressionistic, water-colored moving shot of the Scottish countryside that makes you wonder, what is this heaven that can be such hell for a few characters? The movie's blurb seems faintly promising some salacious detail (wife of paralyzed man has sex with others for his sake, etc.
), but the reality of the plot and execution is far different. This is a brilliant movie about faith and love.. not something Lars von Trier has ever managed since then.
