Review of Boy Interrupted (2009) by Dan P — 09 Aug 2009
I just finished watching this documentary on HBO. Wow. It's a film by a woman named Dana Perry, about her son Evan who ended his own life at age 15. The film chronicles his brief life, his struggles with mental illness and his family's struggles with him, the illness and ultimately his death. It is well-done, sensitive to the subject of mental illness and extremely impactful.
As a mental health professional, I found it to be one of the best documentaries on the subject of suicide that I've seen, as well as a decent discussion of Bipolar Disorder and mental illness in general. Much better, IMHO, than another film I DO like called "The Bridge." This one does a better job of helping us know young Evan Perry as a person, rather than simply a victim of a tragedy.
Very well done, and I'd recommend to anyone in the field or anyone who has been touched by mental illness or the devastating effects of suicide.
