Review of Boy Interrupted (2009) by Jeff S — 06 Nov 2009
This is a haunting look at one child's struggle with bipolar depression, and the toll it took on his family. The documentary, candid and shocking at times, will remain in your thoughts for days, especially if you are a parent.
My only criticism is the producers of the film were the boy's own parents. It seemed like a conflict of interest. What could be more important than caring for their son and his extreme illness. Making a film about it? Videotaping and taking photos of highly disturbing episodes? It's likely that a lot of what is shown is taken out of context, and included for emphasis in the documentary, but even so, that feels a little backward to me.
Perhaps, being filmmakers, this is the only way they knew how to grieve.
