Review of Body Heat (1981) by Kia M — 07 Mar 2013
A slow, sweaty, and steamy conversion of the noir story in Double Indemnity to an 80's setting with less intelligent characters and an ending less satisfying. Ned is a lawyer in a small Florida town who is seduced by the married Matty to murder her rich husband so that she will inherit his wealth and possessions.
Once the deed has been done, however, Ned falls prey to the faultiness of his own plan and discovers that Matty had prepared for the situation far more than he ever could. Decent acting helps make it a suspenseful and unpredictable thriller, but the plot moves awfully slow until the murder is carried out, and the story is far from original, as it has been played out by the classic (and better) noirs of the 30's 40's.
That said, the film does manage to wring plenty of clever dialogue from the cast and show off plenty of style without adding much to the genre.
