I don't understand what the critics meant when they said people walking out without understanding the story? How's that possible, any idiot with an average brain can understand the story. Had this been said about Mulholand Drive, it would have been more credible. Blue Velvet is one of the better films of Lynch. It's got a good feel to it, the sex-exploitation kind of feel and the background scores are simply awesome with great pop music. It has a Hitchcockian feel to it, but considering the fact that this has been termed as a mystery thriller, it's slightly disappointing because there is no real mystery and at times the plot is thin. You get the whole story out at your feet half way in, the rest is just how it all unfolds. It surely does so in a classic Hitchcock style, but there's hardly any mystery. The performances are good, MacLachlan, Dennis Hooper, Rossellini and Laura Dern give noteworthy performances. What's most interesting is the lead male character, he is always treading into the dark side. He despises the sexual violence like any normal human, but finds sexual pleasures in the dark side, having polygamous relations and all. Lynch however, is still a bad director, the scene with a dead man and a lobotomized man is a fine example as no one knows what the fuck even happened there.
