Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Who A — 08 Apr 2018
It was unusual. An interesting experience.
This is my first time seeing Kyle act outside of the Twin Peaks universe, so it was a bit weird for me. Managed to get myself out of the Cooper mindset easy enough though. He acted a somewhat believable teenager here, although sometimes it looked like he was overacting. And sometimes his character didn't make much sense, but that's how the story itself was written.
Dern played her part a bit better than Kyle, in my opinion. Dennis Hopper was an absolute maniac, just felt like he went ham on this role. The woman who played Dorothy was just kind of weird. Her character itself was weird, but something felt a little off about her acting. Her voice.
Now, this movie was insanely atmospheric. A little after this movie begins, this fog rolls in and you're completely immersed in what's going on in the movie, and it feels like one coherent whole. Perfectly stitched together. The music, the settings, the moody feeling of it all. Really enjoyed that aspect of the movie.
The story itself is just ok, nothing that stood out there. The best parts about it were Kyle's character's journey into this strange world as a young inexperienced guy whose fantasies collide with reality. It was pretty fascinating there. This movie's depth is in other places than the seemingly superficial storyline.
An overall enjoyable experience, definitely leaves you with food for thought. It's not a movie you just watch once and don't even think about it again. It's a homework kind of movie.
P.S. what the fuck was that with the heineken??
