Thanks to a genius screenplay and extraordinary acting performances, Blue Valentine is one of the most genuine and authentic films I have ever seen.

From writer/director Derek Cianfrance, this film is a glimpse into a relationship between the two lead characters. Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) are a married couple who are struggling to stay connected. As we watch their marriage crumble right before our eyes, we are presented with different flashback scenes chronicling the beginning of their relationship when things were exciting and fresh. When the couple goes for a weekend getaway at a hotel, things reach an all-time low, leaving them both to question whether or not the magic is still there.

Ryan Gosling is one of the top young actors in Hollywood today and he couldn't deserve it any more. I've been impressed with other performances I've seen from him, but this one really turned me into a fan. It's just a raw, realistic portrayal and I don't think anyone could do any better. You watch this man trying so hard to save his marriage and you almost forget it's just a movie. The praise doesn't end there though. Michelle Williams is also fantastic and is another actor that I am truly starting to appreciate. These two worked together perfectly and you can see it in both the highs and lows of their relationship. Just outstanding.

Derek Cianfrance is quickly turning me into a huge fan. Between Blue Valentine and "The Place Beyond The Pines," it's obvious this guy knows what he is doing. I've seen my fair share of romantic dramas, and as good as some of them are, they just don't feel like real situations that could actually happen. There is no exciting plot or ridiculous twist with Blue Valentine. Instead, you get to experience the events of a marriage that is on its last leg. It's an emotionally gripping, powerful experience that receives my highest praise. 5 stars.
