Review of Birdemic 2: The Resurrection (2013) by Tom R — 25 Apr 2013
(1 Star) I knew exactly what I was getting into, but nothing can prepare you for a movie as poorly made as Birdemic 2: The Resurrection. If you've seen the first one, you already know how unbelievably terrible everything is: writing, direction, acting, cinematography, music... EVERYTHING! Anybody can make a bad movie, but it takes a special kind of mental illness for all the filmmaking decisions made in Birdemic 2.
Here's what's new: different gif files of birds, a scene of nudity, they're in California, a bizarre jellyfish attack, cavemen, zombies, and there are two new idiots running around shooting bad CG birds. But everything is pretty much the same as the first, down to the scenes. Idiot sees girl in a restaurant, they somehow become a couple, they get a cartoonishly simple amount of money, they go on a few dates, then BIRDEMIC!! The birds attack and kill people in hilarious ways and they fly off with no resolution. The End. This is the same as the first film with barely any deviation from the plot.
Honestly though, it's entertaining because it's so bad. There are some filmmakers who try to create deliberately bad films, but you cannot create camp. If you've seen any interviews or DVD special features with the director James Nguyen, you'll see that he actually believes he's making a good film... he references Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, and Orson Welles as his influences. He loves making films, but he is not a filmmaker... he has no understanding of how good films are written, shot, and edited. But I'd rather watch a trainwreck like Birdemic 2 than a self-serving and boring mockbuster any day (ie films made by The Asylum). Birdemic is a huge piece of crap that is an unsightly stain on cinema, but that's what you should be expecting.
