Review of Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) by Christopher G — 16 Jun 2012
Having grown up on films like Demon Seed, Scanners, Silent Running, The Andromeda Strain, Phase IV, Westworld, The Black Hole (thank you WPIX, NY) and being familiar with the aesthetics of works like Carl Sagan's Cosmos, the washed-out Polaroid feel of Boards of Canada album covers; the endless reds, browns, greens, and yellows of the unofficial but omnipresent decor of the 1970s; I felt this movie was a pitch-perfect love letter to forgotten film and fashion themes of my childhood.
It pains me to say that while it is a fundamentally flawless execution in that respect, most people may find little of interest in it. If it had a message, it might be that the dominantly naturalistic and materialistic views of the eras it references (even including chemical attempts at finding enlightenment) are ultimately empty and unfathomably dark.
I'd give it 5 stars for people who can be satisfied with the nostalgia and care involved in its creation, and 3 stars for everyone else. Avg: 4 stars.
