Review of Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) by Billy G — 04 Jun 2017
Panos Cosmatos' debut feature follows a young girl with superpowers who is being experimented upon by a sadistic scientist. The visual style is an impressive mixture of surreal images and '80s aesthetic that gives off a retro and oppressively claustrophobic feel.
But as the plot plods along it becomes clear that those flashy images are there to add padding to a paper-thin story. The run-time isn't justified and the actors aren't given enough substance to allow their characters any depth.
This film is the definition of style over substance.
