Review of Ben-Hur (1959) by Jedo D — 05 Dec 2014
I am a man of Rome, not necessarily of the Republic but of the idea it was becoming as it was moving towards its fall. I am much aware of the faillure of some people to see just how much Rome has affected them and on top of that I am aware of how much the new religion helped tear the world apart.
So I am biased against Ben Hur. I recognize a lot of effort, money and marketing went into this movie and it is is good from the technical point of view, but its preachiness, smugness and cartoony characters.
Of course they keep finding ways to stick Jesus into this. Meh. But yes, it has the most impressive chariot racing scene of all times, probably of the future as well as the past.
