Review of Ben-Hur (1959) by Ayrton C — 15 Sep 2017
The biggest of all epics, 'Ben Hur' is a flamboyant peplum, that's intentionally enormously epic while it opens with its monumental score and nothing less than the Sistine chapel as an overture.
It may be called hammy by purists, but it is extravagantly fun, without ever being nor tedious nor ridiculous in its four-hour grandiosity. Wyler's epic is a good example of the exorbitantly entertaining films that could only be made by the Classical Hollywood.
