Belle is all at once familiar and something new. Director Amma Asante has produced a perfect balancing act, creating a film that is both a perfect period Oscar bait piece and a completely new perspecive.
It is subtle in the best possible way and is a gateway film to a more diverse voice in mainstream cinema.
