Review of Beauty and the Beast (2014) by Marty L — 26 Apr 2018
An excellent film that deserves much more exposure and thanks to Netflix it is, which is how I discovered it. Not only a better version of the original Beauty and the Beast fairy tale than Disney's, but as a film it is superior in every way.
The plot inherits the tale's flaw of Belle falling in love with the beast so quickly with little to no reasoning, but that's just how the story goes so so be it. It's an engaging story that holds your interest from start to finish without cheap tricks or mindless action.
Every scene has a purpose and moves the story along at good pace. It's visually very artistic and beautiful without being oversaturated. The scenes that needed to be spectacular were and the scenes that needed to be simple were, but always beautifully shot.
It was intelligently written, costume and set design were great and the acting performances were also very good all round. It probably could have been drawn out longer because it feels like there's more to be told about this world and its people than meets the eye, but I think it was edited just right.
I have nothing really negative to say about this film, but... I have to wonder why the dogs were turned into weird squeaky little dog things?
