Review of Beatriz at Dinner (2017) by Jennifer S — 07 Jul 2017
We had high hopes for a comedy with societal undertones, but this wasn't it. The characters were all somewhat unlikable and thinly sketched out, except for Beatriz. It is one of those films that pretends to be artsy by leaving out major plot elements and hoping the audience will just be in awe of the underlying wisdom and magic, but in this case, there isn't any.
The film feels like they ran out of time and money, perhaps on the meal. The filming is quite tight and personal, but overall, it lacks any feeling that it is finished. It wasn't quite a "I want my 2 hours back" but close.
