Review of Beaches (1988) by Jean B — 06 Nov 2008
I'm not a particular fan of older Bette Midler films (think frizzy hair) because they all look the same... but what do I know, I haven't the patience to watch them. "Beaches" was something that I watched due to a friend of a friend's recommendation that it was THE 80s movie on girlfriendship. And it was exactly that. Big hair, check. Shoulder pads, check. Friends who learn to stay besties through thick and thin, check. Cheesy 80s music to cue in all the sad/happy moments, check.
My favorite part is actually in the middle of the movie when both are married and have attained a certain level of success and comfort. In their eagerness to show how they have spent the last several years, they start to spout off about themselves and things quickly turn catty... and finally, a bit more interesting. Instead of congratulating each other, the green-eyed monster gets the better of them both. The hefty pile of letters they have each accumulated over the years are put to the wayside by a single spat of passion. Things remain that way until both are humbled by life's unexpected twists, and Hil and CC turn to each other in forgiveness and in support.
