Review of Beach Rats (2017) by Tim M — 07 Feb 2018
Usually when you watch a feature length film and there is zero character development from each player you will pan a movie, however 'Beach Rats' featuring a breakthrough performance from Harris Dickinson breaks that mold.
Dickinson plays Frankie a teenager questioning his sexuality. Unfortunately, Eliza Hittman who wrote and directed takes some overdone plot points to further the story, which I could have done without.
I enjoy watching Dickinson act, but it's mostly chasing its own tale. I wasn't slobbering over myself about 'Moonlight' (it's a fine film), but this makes me think of it in a much higher regard.
This movie could have used a lot more pieces to explain and show the torment a closeted gay teen goes through, but instead opts for nudity and sex scenes. Final Score: 5.8/10.
