Review of Be Kind Rewind (2008) by Thomas P — 02 May 2011
My Rating: 63%.
I just about liked this film as Jack Black is in it and the film in the end isn't too bad. It isn't bad acting or bad story. The film just isn't that interesting. Nevertheless the film is very interesting and is 'make a Movie within a Movie' film.
Be Kind Rewind is a VHS Rental store owned by a man called Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover). He entrusts his shop to the hands of his only employee, Mike (Mos Def). Around comes his friend Jerry, who basically gets in the way of things. Eventually he drags him along to try and sabotage an electric substation. Unfortunately Jerry gets electrocuted. He comes to the store the next day, magnetised and pretty soon every video ape in the store brakes. So they try to recreate each film.
They make all different films, including Ghostbusters, Robocop and even The Lion King. It is very funny to see them recreating all the films and in the end the film has a slight emotional impact as they have all tried to put a film together (that we actually see in the very beginning of the film) In order to save what they do(Being making films). It is a nice fresh and creative way of saying we love what we do and you can't take it away from us.
Danny Glover's appearance was nice to see, and Jack Black was funny as usual. And what's this, Mia Ferrow? For those that don't know she is the classic actress who in 1968 starred in Rosemary's baby. The classic and influential horror film. Cameron Diaz also stars in the film, so the film certainly has its share of good actors. Overall the film is enough to keep you satisfied and is an interesting notion. Well worth checking this one out.
