Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Ross B — 21 Jun 2012
Kinji Fukasaku creates a bleak and terrifying Japan in this 2001 horror action film. In the near future, Japan passes a law to try and curb the youth violence and disrespect in the country. The Battle Royal Law states that one ninth grade class will be chosen at random and forced to fight to the death.
After three days, if there are more than one person alive, then everyone dies. The film is extremely violent but at the same time delves into the true meaning of friendship. At the same token, it also looks at the depths of our society and, like Lord of the Flies, what even children will do for survival.
It is tough to watch at points and for those who loved the Hunger Games and can stomach the amount of violence, then it is a worthwhile see.
