Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Christopher C — 19 Nov 2018
Read the book (yes, this is based on an amazing book that I read in a day). Watch the movie. Read the Manga. I was incredibly impressed with how well the social commentary was translated onto film (if you didn't read the book, you'll most likely miss a lot of the nuances in the film). The book, the manga, the film have all been panned by overly sensitive types as gratuitous violence. To them I say DON'T FUCKING WATCH IT. Easy peasy. Second, get over yourselves. This is brilliant storytelling in a way that, it seems, only Japan knows how to do.
And, please, people...STOP equating/comparing this to Hunger Games. It is a blatant ripoff, the only difference being that Hunger Games is made for fragile American sensitivities and profit. That and the average movie goers attention span. There are no nuances in Hunger Games. Hunger Games is to Battle Royale what Twilight is to Anne Rice.
