Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Oluwafemi A — 13 Apr 2013
A thought provoking, if not a little heightened, commentary on society. I'm not sure if society could ever really get this way, but I do understand mankind's capacity to subjugate groups of people, we do it so well.
This message is wrapped up nicely in an otherwise decent martial arts action flick. The action scenes feel desperate and frantic as they should and it was nice that most didn't know how to fight, so although the violence was plentiful, it was by no means glorified.
Though I have to call the film out on the absurdity of how characters would take gun shots, it was a little funny to see someone get up and run after taking several bullets to the chest. This film should definitely be appreciated for its message more than anything.
It's kind of a shame more of the world knows of the Hunger Games than this.
