Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Tanner B — 31 May 2016
Battle Royale (2000) ???? C-114m. D: Kinji Fukasaku. Takeshi Kitano, Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Tarô Yamamoto, Chiaki Kuriyama. Stunning film about young teenagers who compete in a large battle to the death against their own will.
Jarring and violent, to be sure, but mature, gripping, and beautifully crafted, for its humanity as well as its powerful action scenes. This was taken very seriously in Japan (and was understandably a big hit) but went unreleased in the U.
S. for more than a decade because of real school shootings; it is now considered a classic. Many feel this was the inspiration for THE HUNGER GAMES. Director's cut runs 122 minutes.
