Review of Battle of Britain (1969) by Daniel K — 09 Nov 2008
This is a very entertaining and well done picture. The air-to-air battles are numerous and engaging, especially considering the technology available. There are some stirring and effective choices made in terms of score as well.
However, I can't get over the fact that Hell's Angels still contains some of the best air-to-air combat scenes ever filmed. The film contains a good smattering of characters from every level of the action.
It also manages to cover both sides reasonably equally in almost all respects. It's obviously told from the perspective of the Brit's, but the German's are not demonized, rather they are humanized for the most part.
It's certainly not the best WWII picture made in its time, but its the best picture we have concerning this particular aspect of the war and I would venture to say it does it justice. In the grand scheme of things however, this could stand a remake, while a picture like A Bridge Too Far does not require it.
