Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Paul A — 24 Dec 2008
Exquisite cinematography, like a series of moving paintings by Gainsborough or Watteau. I think that this is underrated Kubrick; besides being gorgeous, it really is a well-done if very slowly paced (three hours+) film: the witty and wry narrated tale of a handsome young Irish social climber who rises meteorically in the world, only to lose it all to ambition and greed.
Ryan OâNeal is a bit stiff in the title role (his accent is all over the map), but he IS selfish and downright pretty, so it all somehow works. :).
