Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Andy S — 25 Dec 2017
There's no other movie quite like this one. Not even one that comes close to it. You can just tell how much time, passion, and precision Kubrick put into this movie.
It's amazing to see that this would have been the 'Napoleon' movie that Kubrick initially wanted to make. I can't imagine how that would have turned out, I would have loved to see that. But this movie will do. It will do for years to come, being that it is one of my favorite movies of all time and probably my favorite Kubrick movie.
The set pieces and filming locations make you feel like you're really there. And we are really there as a matter of fact. Kubrick really shot in Ireland, Scotland, and England. Makes me want to live in one of those cottages in the English countryside. A truly beautiful part of the world and England.
The story in itself is wonderfully written pulling you in ever so closer with every event that happens. It is kind of sad to see this young man turn into a somewhat ruthless and ego-driven person. But in the end, he got what he deserved.
Absolutely befuddled that Kubrick used lenses from NASA to shoot the candlelit sequences. I can't believe that, A, NASA lent him those lenses, B, Kubrick was up to the challenge of shooting such sequences, and C, that Kubrick had the connections to be able to get his hands on the equipment he did.
Overall, absolutely mesmerizing film. Everything is perfect!
