Of course "Barry Lyndon" is one of the best examples of set design, makeup and hairstyling and costume design, but it sure isn't one of Kubrick's best work. I personally think it is a bit overrated.
It's far form being one of the greatest movies ever made. The 3 hours might have been to tuff for me, and I'm a 3 hours long movies fan. But the running time might have been not so much well used.
