Review of Babes in Arms (1939) by Nate W — 29 Aug 2009
The premise is a bit farfetched â?? these "kids" all act too grown up to be believable â?? but it's pulled off by the enthusiasm of the performances, most notably Mickey Rooney, whose exuberance is irrepressible.
The key to the film's success is Busby Berkely's expert staging of the musical numbers, so wonderful that he was teamed with Rooney and Garland for three additional rehashes of this movie in following years.
There's a certain irony in a big-budget studio production such as this lamenting the death of vaudeville at the hands of the talking picture.
