Review of Babes in Arms (1939) by Jessica H — 19 Feb 2008
This movie is fucking disturbing on so many levels.
1. mickey rooney is the male lead and was the top box office draw in 1939. fucking weird.
2. so much blackface.
3. the insane "god's country" number.
4. weird opera singing vs. conversational microphone singing.
Despite all this, the movie is entertaining. the songs are strange, especially for a musical like this, but somehow appealing. the subtle jabs at hitler and non-allies are humorous and witty. overall, not one of busby berkeley's best, but only because he had to focus on stars instead of the crazy geometric figures for which he is famous.
