Review of Awakenings (1990) by Matthew H — 17 Jan 2014
Robin Williams & DeNiro are great together in this excellent little drama. Williams plays oddball worry-wart Doctor Sayer who gets a job at a mental health facility and is soon put in charge of a group of mental patients all showing unresponsive conditions, DeNiro being one of said patients.
Dr. Sayer figures out a pattern between behaviors and tests a drug called L-DOPA on one of the patients named Leonard (DeNiro) and is amazed to see him be awakened from his state to a far more functional state.
The rest of the group as well but It doesn't last too long before things start going wrong. The story is filled with struggle, victory and acceptance and is told extremely well. Great soundtrack also! This is certainly worth your time.
