Review of Awakenings (1990) by Raji K — 06 Mar 2015
Based on a true story, Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams) works with mental patient Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro). On a hunch he believes drug will bring previous catatonic patient Lowe back to a functioning person.
The drug works, but this film enlightens on how patients might feel or act even treated and that is not always a happy ending. Some come to realize all they have lost, and in the case of Lowe, begins to regress as if life is now taken away.
Awakenings was a really good luck on the struggles and challenges of battling mental illness from its peaks to its valleys. Williams and De Niro work great together and really seem to give this story the light it deserves.
