Review of Autumn Sonata (1978) by Luke P — 14 Jan 2009
Phew! Not a film for those accustomed to the glossy Hollywood schmaltz that routinely steers clear from such realistic stories and heavily flawed characters.
As the reunited mother and daughter struggle to maintain their masks of civility and begin to vent a life's worth of psychological injuries, Bergman's masterful and sometimes claustrophobic direction provides no escape from the incredibly emotional scenes of familial anguish and personal turmoil.
This film could also be used as a video on Parenting 101 - The Dos and Don'ts! It's powerful stuff.
