Review of Autumn Sonata (1978) by Joss D — 09 Jul 2012
Powerful and deeply moving, this is a bit of a slow burner which reaches full force during an all-night argument between (Ingrid) Bergman and Ullman the heart of the film. Beautiful use of classical music and some incredible acting, the film is genuinely emotional yet never sentimental (just as Bergman lectures her daughter during the iconic scene where the two play Chopin's Prelude #2), a dark study of repression and underlying anger at the heart of a neglected maternal relationship.
