Review of Au Hasard Balthazar (1966) by Lucia S — 19 Feb 2008
I'm quite torn about this movie. On the one side Bresson does a good job of using symbolism and allegory throughout the film--it really brings in the audience when things are seen fron Balthazar's eyes.
Yet where was the vindication throughout the film. It seemed as though everyone was selfish and greedy within their own little world--and the little donkey was the only who gave selflessly. I suppose that some could draw the parallel that Balthazar represents a type of "Christ" figure that stood by and meekly accepted abuse by those he loved.
The ending absolutely broke my heart. He was a saint evidenced by the pure and innocent white sheep flocking to him at the end. A real tearjerker with odd cuts and pacing. I think I would have liked it more had there been some real resolution.
..but I suppose that's life...there never is any real form of closure. In the end, isn't it ironic that we, humans, look so foolish through the eyes of an animal. We simply can't learn from our mistakes.
