Review of Apocalypse Now (1979) by Parker S — 26 Jun 2012
While I'm sure there are some very heavy symbols for stuff in this movie, I didn't search very hard for them. What I took away from this (unique and pretty darn great movie) was the horrible realities of war.
It was a hallucinogenic, half real, half fantasy trip down the physical and mental insanity that is war. From the strangely happy and careless leader who only cares about killing the Vietnamese to go surfing, to the suffering Kurtz, this movie pulls you in so many directions, that you leave the movie in awe and confusion, with horrific images burned in your head.
Originally I would've given the movie 3 1/2 stars to 4, but as I reflect on it more and more over these past months, I realize that Apocalypse Now keeps popping up. I now understand why it is considered a masterpiece.
Its truly unique, inventive, thrilling, horrifying and most of all, it sticks with you which is what a movie should do.
