Review of Another Year (2010) by Clifford H — 10 Jun 2011
Ebert strongly recommened it, and he screwed me over. Ebert claims the protagnoists are "not caricatures, not comforting, not cliches, but simply two people I wish I knew? [He]'d look forward to them every time [he] visited their house and be slow to leave.
" However, the film I saw depicts the stereotypical happily aging couple who have been sweethearts forever sweet as lollipops with each other and their place in the world, a cliched life of bliss.
Only in the final act do we see a flash of anger on their faces. The four season structure also could not be more conventional. I won't say the film is boring, because it's very accessible -- quite possibly Leigh's most accessible film ever.
But there's no substance here. No catharsis. It's just a nice film that you probably wouldn't really ever want to see again unless by chance.
