Review of Another Year (2010) by Joao G — 22 Nov 2012
Another Year is a movie made for movie snobs. Casual movie goers or those who are looking to be entertained will most likely frown and curse the wasted two hours on this depressing film but for the few who enjoy sad and dreary movies Another Year provides great acting and food for thought.
While I am a person who prefers a plot to seal up any loose ends by the credits I can appreciate the way director Mike Leigh leaves the lives of his characters up to the viewers interpretations. I understand the arc of birth and death as presented by the four seasons and can appreciate the significance of the entire movie but Another Year just left me feeling bland (which may have been the point).
At times Another Year felt aimless but it should appeal to existentialists, movie critics and those who love taking their movies a bit too seriously.
