Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Martha R — 19 Nov 2018
Allen opens the film with a fourth wall breaking monologue about some old jokes. This is to introduce us to the film as being self aware. This was my first Woody Allen film and I found myself laughing throughout.
Allen uses the disembodied world of the film to showcase his storytelling techniques such as fourth wall breaks and split screens. Not to give all attention to Allen, Keaton gives a lovely performance as the quirky and awkward titular character showing her many ticks and quirks.
The story is devastating with humor and sadness. Wit and charm fill the screenplay but also pure emotion. This is my favorite romantic comedy and I donï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2(TM)t usually like those this is a definite recommend for Woody Allen fans and fans of rom-coms in general.
