Review of And When Did You Last See Your Father? (2007) by Matt M — 24 Dec 2008
I thought this was a very well-done, reflective movie. The parent-child relationship is portrayed in all its ambiguity, and Colin Firth's character is by no means flawless. For instance, the movie hints at his own dysfunctional disconnetion with his wife at times, but it keeps this subtle, not overlaying the complexity of life with too much didacticism.
And though I should've seen it coming, the final reflection of the movie that asks the question of what it really means to *see* one's parent hit me powerfully, invoking the question of how being someone's child both opens up and occludes our true understanding of them.
