Review of An American Crime (2007) by Susan R — 17 Sep 2013
2/5 --- A disturbing yet truthful telling of the short life of Sylvia Likens (actress Ellen Page), who was abused by her neighbor (Catherine Keener) and her family of 6. The story itself is quite unbelievable and yes horrific, but the movie doesn't work.
The plot barely moves along, there's no emotional connection made with any characters...it's almost a bit like torture porn but no porn, and it makes no sense --- but maybe that's the point, that there are sick people out there doing awful things to other people.
The script is bad and has a huge "twist" that actually makes the movie worse...Needed more direction to be taken seriously :(.
