Review of Amy (2015) by Shawn R — 07 Jan 2016
I'm not really a fan of Amy Winehouse's music, but this is a great doc. It benefits from having a good amount of personal documentation, but it's put together very well regardless. The doc really lets us get to know its subject, and to feel the tragedy of what happened.
It's also, almost by default, an attack on the paparazzi culture that does seemed to have contributed (but not the cause of) to Winehouse's problems. While not being a fan of hers before seeing the doc (not a fan of jazz), it did leave me respecting her talent.
I did end up liking her song "Back to Black," though truthfully I still don't see how her song "Rehab" became such a huge hit. Anyways, a very powerful documentary.
