Review of Amour (2012) by Kyle A — 03 Feb 2013
A masterpiece. Do I want it to win Best Picture? No I don't. It's not the sort of film that I want representing the Oscars. And yet, this film will last in my mind and the minds of most viewers for a lifetime.
It is uncompromising in it's reality. The long, painful takes and lack of music make you feel like you're actually watching a couple struggle through the last moments of their lives. Is it fun? Absolutely not, yet it is beautiful and powerful.
The symbolism of the paintings, the pigeon, and even the lighting, is inherently tragic and beautiful. The acting is about as flawless as any film I've ever seen, in fact I rarely had a place where I didn't completely and utterly accept that what I was watching was indeed reality.
I do not approve of the ultimate decision the film makes, but I completely understand it, just as much as I understand the characters and their pain. Looking back, I feel like I deserve a shirt that says "I survived Amour.
.. but I will never forget it.".
