Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Richard S — 19 Jan 2008
Can't be bettered as an anti-war movie, and you can't understand the First World War in popular memory without this film. So many of the images we have of the conflict come from this production.
I love the sincerity of the characters (despite classic 1930s melodrama). Sure, you should read the book, but this film is of equal importance in world culture in its own right (Lemmle and Remarque collaborated in its production, the film attracting the ire of the NSDAP for its version of the Weltkrieg).
