Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Ayrton Anthony C — 09 Sep 2017
Winner of the Oscar for Best Picture (called "Outstanding Production" at the time) and one of the earliest anti-war films, "All Quiet on the Western Front" details the horrors of war through a young soldier who was led to believe that war was glorious, but realizes the horrible truth as he fights during WWI and the effects that plague him (and his friends) afterwards. Featuring great acting, magnificent cinematography/action for its time, great direction from Lewis Milestone (who won the Oscar for Best Director), and a sincere, touching story, "All Quiet on the Western Front" serves as one of the best (war) films of both the 1930s and the 20th Century!
"This story is neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were destroyed by war...".
