(1930) All Quiet On The Western Front.
WAR/ SOCIAL COMMENTARY.
Based on a novel by Erich Maria Remarque which at the beginning has teaching instructor manipulating his students to enlist into the army as heroes for the fatherland's cause as we start to follow them in training. But as the movie is progressing, it then centers on a student named Paul played by Lew Ayres as he slowly realizes he's been disillusioned about war in general as he witnesses each casualty from his peer group. Instead of the director focusing what the two countries are fighting about, it instead centers on the characters who are doing all the fighting which they have to endure both mental and physical pain as well as hunger.
While watching this movie reminded me of an old war veteran who's survived and served both wars of WW1 and WWII, and said that before he died that the people who're serving act like pawns, for after they come back, they're left with zero skills except what they did in the military. The other thing I also liked, is the fact that viewers also get the sense what World War 1 is like which is different than the WWII and the Vietnam War.
3 out of 4 stars.
