Still moves with power...
You can't watch it and look away. And its characters are profoundly felt, as it traces the journey of a life. Paul and Kat and Mueller! Sincere even on such a large scale, which makes it great. So many excellent thematic truths as well...cowardice and friendship and nice boots. Gives you a chill in some of the greatest scenes, like when Paul is in the pit with the dead guy. Fabulous tracking shots as well, along with some sweet gore. Transcends the 1930s and WWI and national boundaries as one of those great stories of mutual understanding and pain.
