Two major aspects distinguished the decade of the 30s: WWII had not yet started, and silent cinema was about to say farewell to the world (if it had not been because of Chaplin's innertia). Names started to come out of the blue, and Milestone was one of them. Besides achieving landmark technical effects, All Quiet on the Western Front is the absolutely best, furiously merciless testament of the young souls full of dreams facing the unfair and idiotic atrocities of war. A very early anti-war masterpiece to be remembered forever.
