Review of Affliction (2012) by Adam Z — 20 Dec 2007
Insanely depressing but undeniably powerful and compelling work from Paul Schrader starring Nick Nolte (in his absoulte best performance ever) as corrupt traffic cop Wade Whitehouse, who's miserable life only gets worse when he finds himself having to care for his unhappy young daughter, his frightened girlfriend (an enchanting Sissy Spacek), and his deranged, raging-alcoholic father(a terrifying James Coburn, who won an Oscar).
From the moment when he gets obsessed with trying to solve the mystery behind a hunting accident it is clear that there's no hope for him, but Schrader's brilliant writing and direction keep it watchable.
.. and the explosive final confrontation between Wade and his father is unforgettable and not to be missed. I recommend that the AFI put Coburn's character, Glen Whitehouse, on their list of the 50 Greatest Villians of All Time.
