Breathtaking, Nolte is flawless and complex in the central role, James Coburn earns his Oscar as the lifelong drunken abusive father. Perhaps it could have done without the final monologue, but still this is an absolutely wonderful, accomplished, brave piece of filmmaking from Schrader and co.
