Review of Adaptation. (2002) by Tyler S — 09 Aug 2010
In so many ways this is a perfect movie. It has so many layers to break down that every viewing makes the movie more and more of a rewarding experience. I think half of the depth in this movie wasn't even intentionally, it just bled out of Charlie Kaufman's persona and his frustration and self-loathing with the irony of his struggle between what he wanted to achieve and what he was creating.
The genius is it is exactly that irony that we're seeing on screen. Charlie's struggle throughout the movie is to break molds, make a movie where people don't change, where there isn't a strict three act structure following McKee's formula, and there's a bittersweet quality in that Charlie's character succeeds.
.. but his vision, his mission, doesn't. Also, as far as I know possibly the only movie that resulted in a fictitious person (Donald Kaufman) being nominated for an academy award. So much to love here.
